The Sad and Lonely Death of a Gentle Giant.

A 44ft Sperm Whale became beached on Redcar beach in Cleveland England. Partially submerged and despite the wet jets of firefighters the whale  was pronounced dead shortly after 9am. The British Divers Marine Life Rescue were called to help the stricken creature but said the North Sea was the wrong environment for such a large creature and any attempt to re float it would have been cruel- even if it was possible to do so. Although there are wales in the North Sea it is not a suitable environment for a sperm whale because the food supply is not there.If iIt doesn't eat, it becomes malnourished, it becomes dehydrated because whales do not drink - they get their liquid from their food.

They say although it has died this has been the better option.

It feels almost ironic that only last week I was watching Whale Wars, which follows the Sea Shepherd crew as they put their lives on the line and go and save the whale.

The anti-whaling boat that was sliced in two in a collision with a Japanese whaling ship sank in the Antarctic, ending a frantic effort to salvage the $1.8m (£1.1m) craft. The Ady Gil,a 24-metre (78ft) catamaran belonging to the Sea Shepherd marine conservation group, sank two days after it was battered by the fleet's security ship, the Shonan Maru No 2, in the most violent confrontation between whalers and activists for six years.

The boat lost a large section of its bow in the collision, and one of its six crew sustained minor injuries. The whaling ship was not damaged. Each side has blamed the other for the collision.
